in fall 2024, students in massart’s sustainable fashion design course collaborated with refleece, a company that makes new products from damaged outdoor gear to create our own designs from donated damaged gear. i used an arcteryx jacket and copper mountain pants to create a top and skirt intended to be a stylish look with utilitarian elements rather than for use as functional outdoor gear. i used elastic, zippers, velcro, drawstrings and other elements i cut out from the garments to fit these new garments perfectly to the body and to achieve my desired design. i was able to successfully carry out the design i had in mind with the two garments i recycled without needing to source any extra textiles.
